I hadn't said anything before because I didn't want a long goodbye thread...
Jake has been sick for about a week. I almost joked here Saturday he was milking it for all it's worth and getting lots of human food like soup since he lost interest in kibble. He spent about a half hour Saturday walking around the yard in the sun. He went off food Sunday, off water yesterday, didn't even want ice cubes I offered today.
He was comfortable and not in pain, so I let nature take it's course.
He just passed away a few minutes ago while I was in the kitchen preparing a late dinner for myself. I took a nap this afternoon, since I had been up till 4am with him last night so he wouldn't be alone when we had some thunderstorms pass through.
He was curled up underneath my desk.
I have to go run down the firehouse now and get a hospital blanket so I can wrap him up and put his body in the garage now until I can dig the grave in morning.
God speed Jake. I'll post more later.

I have a bunch of photos up now at: ohjustducky.blogspot.com/2010/08/jake.htmlThe last few nights have been unusual, with no dog on the bed with me. We'll see if Oscar starts hopping up now that Jake is gone. For the past year or so Oscar who used to sleep at the foot while Jake would have the head next to me hasn't gone up on the bed when Jake or for that matter I'm on it. He's quite happy to go up and lick his balls and leave me a wet spot though...

And as of eight this morning, Jake is at rest on the knoll above the garden, next to Lexie & Misty.

I'm so sorry, Matt. We've had them slip away at home and helped them leave their pain behind. Either way, it's hard. Hugs to you and Oscar.

Yep. It's way, way too quiet in here. I went and had a long visit with my mom to get out of the house.
Oscar is so much mellower. Bought him a stuffed hedgehog -- the boys seldom had toys because they didn't share well. I come home, do my thing in the kitchen, cut the tags of the hedgehog, go in the bedroom, and have to squeeze the noisemaker several times to wake Oscar up to give the 'hog.
Oddest thing is I can smell Jake distinctly. I have so many odors in this house, yet I from all them I smell Jake. I normally don't have that sensitive of a nose, it's curious that something is really tickling my memory on his smell of all things.

Matt, my heart just jumped into my throat. I feel so shocked reading your news and looking through all those beautiful photos. We may never have met but I feel that for the last ten years you and your pack have been woven into my life. I am filled with sadness at your loss but also so happy that Jake got to spend every ounce of his final stage at your feet and on your bed (I have to help Charlie up the stairs these days, but it means so much to him to sleep on the bed). I am so, so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry Matt. Tears are in my eyes as I type this. The grace is that he went peacefully in his sleep, and that he got to spend all that time with you which is where I'm sure he loved it best of all.
Godspeed Jake, you will be missed. And may God's peace be with you Matt.

Matt I am so sorry about your loss of Jake. I am currently in Bristol for the races and bless jakester for sending me an e-mail to let me know. I had been checking the board but with the smaller screen of a laptop I misssed that there was a new post on the Rainbow Bridge forum.

Thanks guys.
It's REALLY freaking quiet in the house now. Jake actually moved here a couple days before I did.
And no, I'm not getting a puppy. That will probably come after Oscar eventually passes on. Can't have him corrupting another generation.

Matt--we will ALL miss Jake. Though we've never met, he's like a member of the family. Our sincerest condolences to you and Oscar.
Think Jake is romping with Dillon and Bubba at the Rainbow Bridge? I'll bet they are telling each other some great "People" stories!

You made me cry. Jake was part of "our" family and I am so sorry for your losing him. But he went at home with you. He was always happiest with you. Hugs Matt, you are a special person. Oscar, Jake, Misty and Lexie were very lucky to have you. Lexie would never of had a chance if you hadn't taken her from me. All the family from here was there to meet Jake and show him all the wonders there is to see and as Michelle said, they are all telling stories about us.

Matt, I'm so sorry to hear of you and Oscars loss. It's always hard to lose a member of the family, 2 legs or 4. I enjoyed the stories you shared from day to day of the boys "shenanigans". I will say a prayer for you and Oscar.
